The Lighted Way

Part 7: The Sabbath and the Early Christian Church

Luke records the story of Christ's crucifixion in chapter 23. Christ has died. If the Seventh-day Sabbath was nailed to the cross, the disciples must start now in showing this to be the case. Surely Jesus would have told them about the change. He found the original Sabbath important enough to mention it twice...

After burying Jesus, did the disciples take up Sunday services as the new holy day?

1) What did the disciples do after seeing to Jesus' burial? ( Luke 23:54-56)

2) Nearly 20 years after Jesus ascended to Heaven, what does Paul call the Seventh-day? ( Acts 13:27) and ( Acts 13:42-44)

Two things are clear from this Scripture. First, Paul still kept the Seventh-day Sabbath. Second, Paul does not honor Sunday in ANY way.

3) What day does the religious gathering take place ( Acts 13:42-44)

Here are some more Scriptures on the subject which may interest you: Acts 17:1-4 and Acts 18:1,4 and 11. Please look them up at your leisure.

Christ Himself taught His followers that they would be keeping Sabbath holy long after His death. In fact, Jesus told the disciples that they would be observing the Seventh-day Sabbath during the Time of Tribulation (Just before Jesus comes).

4) When trouble comes, God's people are to pray their flight not be when? ( Matthew 24:20)

Such a warning about the end of time would be out of place if the Sabbath were about to be done away with. Christ knew the end from the beginning. Obviously then, Jesus intended for His followers to be keeping the Sabbath right up to His second coming.

Still, for many, the issue of the ten commandments being nailed to the cross may seem unresolved. Lets begin with addressing whether or not the ten commandments were nailed to the cross. We will study this topic in our next Bible study.
