The Lighted Way
Can You Trust The Bible?

It is very hard to find something or someone worthy of trust in our modern and morally degenerated society. People fail to be truthful. Our world is filled with injustice. If we are to base our belief system on something reliable, we need for that something to be above reproach. Is there anything in this world today that is 100% above reproach?

Often, we have had to resort to our own senses to dictate truth to us. Since I cannot trust anyone or anything fully, I choose to believe only what I can touch, taste, see, smell, or hear. Sadly, this is not a safe choice either, friend. For we "wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, spiritual wickedness, and the ruler of the darkness of this world." (Ephesians 6:12)

For this reason, basing our belief system solely on our senses, which can be and are manipulated by spiritual forces, is far from trustworthy as well. What then can we use as a basis for ultimate truth? Is there nothing worthy of this level of trust? Yes, friend, there is something! The Word of God! This study will look at the evidence.

1. What does the Bible say?

The Bible says that is the inspired Word of God. The Bible was written by men who were guided by the Holy Ghost. Additionally, the Bible says that it cannot be broken or proved untrue. Let's look at these texts:

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God." 2 Timothy 3:16

"Prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Peter 1:21

"The Scripture cannot be broken" John 10:35

2. Did Jesus Trust the Bible?

When tempted by Satan, Jesus always quoted the Scripture. He also said that the Bible (at that time the Bible was comprised only of the old testament) is truth. He also quoted Scripture to verify the truth He was teaching.

Jesus said, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone..."
"It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
"It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." Matthew 4:4,7,10

"Thy Word is truth." John 17:17

3. Bible prophecies demonstrate that it is true.

Bible prediction of things which would happen in the future show that the Bible is true. Many of the prophecies have come true. This is our basis for believing that the rest will come true as time continues.

"I am the Lord... new things do I declare: before they spring forth (happen) I tell you of them." Isaiah 42:8-9

"I am God... Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done." Isaiah 46:9-10

The following Bible prophecies have come true:

A. Four world empires were to arrise: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome (Daniel chapters 2, 7 & 8)
B. Cyrus was to be the name of the warrior who would capture Babylon (Isaiah 45:1-3)
C. Babylon, after its destruction, would never be inhabited again (Isaiah 13:19-20, Jeremiah 51:37)
D. Egypt would never again be a world "super power" (Ezekiel 29:14, 15; 30:12-13)
E. Terrible calamities and fear were predicted to happen near the end of time. (Luke 21:25-26)
F. Moral degeneracy and a lack of spirituality were predicted in the last days. (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

4. Are the scientific claims in the Bible true?

Yes, the Bible is true. The Holy Spirit guided Bible writers to make scientific claims about things which science had not even discovered yet. Still, they have been completely accurate statements:

A. "He... hangeth the earth upon nothing." Job 26:7 (Job is the Bible's oldest book - yet this scientific fact is presented there).

B. "He... sitteth upon the circle of the earth." Isaiah 40:22 (The Bible said that the earth was round centuries before man discovered it.)

C. "To make the weight for the winds." Job 28:25 (Long before science discovered it, God told man that air has weight).

D. "By Him (Jesus) all things consist." Colossians 1:17 (Consist means "hold together" or "cohere". The real mystery of the atom is not its mega-power. Nuclear physicists can't figure out why it doesn't fly apart. Scientific knowledge says that the atom should fly apart- yet it does not. To science it is a mystery. What mysterious power keeps the atom together? The Bible answers this question. God, Himself, the Creator - keeps everything together from the tiniest atom to the entire universe.)

5. Are the Bible's Health teachings accurate?

A. The Bible teaches that body waste must be carefully covered with dirt. (Deut. 23:12-13)
Moses was instructed by God to bury body waste 3,500 years ahead of its time. This sanitation procedure no doubt saved countless Jewish lives.

B. "Neither let us commit fornication" (1 Corinthians 10:8)
Fornication is immoral sexual conduct. If we were obeying this instruction, our society might have been spared the AIDS epidemic. Abortion would not be a major issue either.

C. The Bible teaches that we should leave alcoholic beverages alone. (Prov. 23:29-32)
Think how many lives this instruction might save. Additionally, families traumatized and co-dependent with an alcoholic member would have been spared tremendous pain.

6. Is the Bible historically accurate?

What God says in His book is true. Sometimes, however, evidence may not yet have been unearthed to substantiate some of the historical facts recorded in the Bible. But, in time, the evidence surfaces.

A. We have discovered archaeological proof that Noah's Ark did (and does) exist! Find out more at the archaeology page of this website.

B. For years, skeptics said the Bible was unreliable because it mentions the Hittite nation (Deuteronomy 7:1), cities like Ninevah (Jonah 1:1-2), and Sodom (Genesis 19:1). Now modern archaeology has confirmed that all three did exist after all.

C. At one time, the 39 kings of ancient Israel and Judah who reigned during the divided kingdom were said to have existed only by the pages of Scripture. Critics charged the Bible with fabrication. But then, archaeologists found cuneiform records that mentioned many of these kings and, once again, the Bible record was proved to be accurate.

7. Another proof that the Bible is accurate is its unity!

This is truly an astounding find. How can 66 books of the Bible maintain harmony with each other when they were written by 40 different people, who in most cases, had never met each other. The Bible was written in three languages. The people who wrote the Bible had extremely different backgrounds and levels of education (kings, shepherds, scientists, fishermen, priests, etc.) Additionally, the Bible was being written over a period of about 1,500 years!

Police know, when investigating a crime, that if you ask all the people who viewed an identical event, each report will differ widely and will virtually always contradict the other reports in some ways. Yet the Bible reads as if it were written by one great mind!

There is an explanation for this. The Bible WAS written by One Great Mind! "Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Ghost is the real Bible author. The four Gospels do sometimes differ in the way they report the same event, but they complement each other.

8. Was Bible Prophecy right about Jesus?

There are more than 125 Old Testament Bible predictions about the Messiah. In fact, Jesus fulfilled them so accurately that Paul used (Jesus did as well) these prophecies to make his convincing arguments proving that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. We are going to look at just 12 of these prophecies:

1. The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 2:1

2. The Messiah would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 1:18-23

3. The Messiah would be a descendant of David (Jeremiah 23:5) - New Testament fulfillment: Revelation 22:16

4. Herod would attempt to murder the Messiah (Jeremiah 31:15) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 2:16-18

5. The Messiah would be betrayed by a friend (Psalm 41:9) - New Testament fulfillment: John 13:18-19, 26)

6. The Messiah would be sold for 30 silver coins (Zechariah 11:12) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 26:14-16

7. The Messiah would be crucified (Zechariah 12:10) - New Testament fulfillment: John 19:16-18, 37

8. Lots would be cast for His clothes (Psalm 22:18) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 27:35

9. None of the Messiah's bones would be broken (Psalm 34:20) - New Testament fulfillment: John 19:31-36

10. The Messiah would be buried in a rich man's tomb (Isaiah 53:9) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 27:57-60

11. The year, day, and hour of His death were foretold (Daniel 9:26-27, Ex. 12:6) - New Testament fulfillment: Matthew 27:45-50

12. The Messiah would be raised from the dead on the third day (Hosea 6:2) - New Testament fulfillment: Acts 10:38-40

In the end, we can see prophetically, historically, Biblically, and archaeologically that the Bible does not just contain the Word of God. It IS the Word of God. "All scripture is given by God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." 2 Timothy 3:16

On this website, each Bible study will use scripture to unlock the meaning in scripture. We will study thoroughly each topic. Our basis for study is that the Bible is the foundation of truth. God said it, and we believe it, and that settles it. It is our hope that you can now agree with this vital foundation.
