The Lighted Way|
How Did Evil Originate?
You've probably heard it all your life: "What you don't know won't hurt you." This couldn't be farther
from the truth than it is in the realm of the spiritual world. There is a brilliant and highly successful
evil genius plotting your destruction. He has no higher goal than to be certain that you will not accept
the salvation Jesus has offered you. His plans are virtually foolproof. He is destroying families, cities,
and even entire nations. He is real. His greatest hold over you is for you to underestimate him.
But God has not left us defenseless. Far from it! Fortunately, God's book, the Bible, names him, unmasks
his plans, and clearly defines a way for us to escape from him. It will not take more than 20 minutes of
your time to complete this lesson. But it could save your life!
1. Who originated sin?|
It is only in the Bible that we find an explanation of the origin of evil. Satan, also called the Devil and
Lucifer, is the one who started sin.
"The devil sinneth from the beginning" 1 John 3:8
"...That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan." Revelation 12:9
2. What was Satan's name before he sinned? Where was he living at that time?
Lucifer (which means "Day Star") was living in heaven. He is symbolized by the king of Babylon in Isaiah 14 and as the king of
Tyrus in Ezekiel 23.
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!" Isaiah 14:12
Jesus said, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:18
"Thou wast upon the holy mountain of God." Ezekiel 28:14
3. How did Lucifer originate?
A. Lucifer was created by God, as were all the angels (Ephesians 3:9, Ezekiel 28:13-15).
B. He was originally a "covering" cherub, or angel.(Ezekiel 28:14) The covering cherubs are angels
which stand on the left and right sides of God's throne. Their wings touch at the tips to cover the throne
of God. (Psalm 99:1)
C. Lucifer's beauty was breathtaking and flawless. He was wise and brilliant intellectually. (Ezekiel 28:12-15)
D. One day this beautiful, perfect angel stopped being flawless... Iniquity was born in him. (Ezekiel 28:15)
4. How can a perfect creature give birth to sin?
Lucifer's sin began when he started to look at himself instead of God. He thought of himself as beautiful. And he
enjoyed the thought. As he thought about himself and his beauty pride began to be born in his heart. (Ezekiel 28:17)
Soon his pride had grown to such an extent that Lucifer thought he was too good to be a mere angel. Lucifer believed
that he was great enough to be equal with God Himself.
5. What happened in heaven because of Lucifer's rebellion?
It finally came to the place where Lucifer would no longer submit to God's will or direction. He worked to
turn the other angels against God. There was no choice but to forcibly throw him out of heaven.
"And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his
angels, and prevailed not (Did he really think he could win against his Creator? Wow!). Neither was their
place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and
Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
6. Now, where is Satan?
An idea, just because it is popular, is not necessarily true. In fact, the popular ideas are often wrong. How many
people believed Noah and got on the ark? Only 8. How many people believed in Jesus and followed Him? Only a handful.
How many people believed the earth was flat? Only the whole world at that time. You get the idea... So, this next
statement may come as a surprise. It certainly goes against the popular notion. But it is the Bible truth that
we are studying here, not popular notions. So here goes...
Satan's headquarters is the earth. It is not hell. (To learn who is really in charge of hell, please complete
that Bible study on this website... Also, please remember, we only present the concepts as the BIBLE teaches
them, whether or not they are popular). Now, let's look at some Scripture:
A. God gave Adam and Eve dominion over the earth. They were the leaders, kings, bosses - under God of course.
B. However, Adam and Eve listened to Satan. At the moment when they surrendered to his temptation, they lost
their dominion over the earth to Satan (Romans 6:16)
C. Satan then became the ruler, or prince of the earth (John 12:31)
D. For this reason, Satan represented the earth in heavenly counsels. Such a counsel meeting is recorded
in the book of Job. Almost as if He's taking roll, God asks Satan where he comes from. "The Lord said unto
Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth,
and from walking up and down in it." (Job 2:2)
7. How does the Prince of the Earth feel about his hapless subjects?
Satan bitterly hates humans. We were created in God's image. He can't harm God, so instead he works with all
his might to remove God's lovely and elevated image from mankind. He wants to reduce people to animal behavior.
This hurts God as He sees us lose our resemblence to Him. Satan loves to cause God pain. By destroying you,
he is hurting God.
"Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! For the Devil is come down unto you, having great wrath,
because he knows that he hath but a short time." (Revelation 12:12)
"Your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." (1 Peter 5:8)
8. When God created Adam and Eve, what one thing did He forbid them to do?
Adam and Eve were given tons of trees in the Garden of Eden. They were given vines, and plants as well. But there
was one tree - the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - which God told them not to eat from. The penalty was death.
"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof
thou shalt surely die." (Genesis 2:17)
9. How did Satan deceive Eve?
"Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the
woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" "And the serpent said unto the woman,
Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and
ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:1,4-5)
Satan used a serpent, the wisest and most beautiful animal God had made, to deceive Eve. Some think the serpent
originally had wings and flew (Isaiah 14:29; 30:6)
We know for sure that the serpent did not crawl as the cursed snakes of today must. Having to crawl on its belly
was part of the curse. (Genesis 3:14)
Satan's lies to Eve were:
A. You won't die
B. Eating the fruit will make you wise
Satan, who invented lying (John 8:44) knew that lies would only be plausible if mixed with the truth. So, Satan
did tell Eve some things that were true. He said she'd know evil after eating the fruit. This was certainly true.
But Satan also implied that God was keeping something good from Adam and Eve. The real truth was that God was
protecting them from the knowledge of heartache, grief, suffering, pain and death! Was knowing evil really a good
thing for them? Of course not! So, God, in His love for them, withheld the one thing that could destroy them.
10. How can eating a piece of fruit be so bad?
Yes, eating the fruit was a terrible sin because it was a direct rejection of one of God's few requirements. It was
open rebellion against God's law and authority. It also demonstrated that our first parents were willing to believe
Satan's lies about how God might withhold something that was good for us, simply because He was threatened by what
we might become if we had it (Satan said we'd be as gods!). And so, by rejecting God's authority and choosing to
believe that God was ultimately untrustworthy, Adam and Eve allied themselves with Satan - God's enemy. This resulted
in a sad seperation between God and humanity (Isaiah 59:2)
Satan's full plan was for Adam and Eve to first sin by eating from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and then
to eat from the Tree of Life. This would make them immortal. But God did not allow this to happen. He made Adam
and Eve leave the garden and He later took the Tree of Life back to heaven.
11. Did God lie to Adam and Eve?
God said, "For in the day that thou eatest thereof (the tree of knowledge of Good and evil), thou shalt surely die."
(Genesis 2:17). But Adam and Eve didn't die that very day! What happened here? Did God make a mistake?
Definately not! God was counting time as he always does. And to God, one day is 1,000 years! Let's see that
in the Bible:
"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord, as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day." 2 Peter 3:8
With this new information, let's see if God's words were right on the money. God said, "For in the millenium
that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die." How long did Adam live?
The Bible says, "And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died." Genesis 5:5
Adam DID die in the day (the same millenium) that he ate of it. God's words are always true.
12. What are Satan's methods to hurt, deceive and destroy people?
We've all heard the wise military strategy, "Know your enemy". There is no greater enemy than Satan. And while we
do not wish to make him our focus. We must take the time to address his tactics because "forewarned is forearmed".
Satan, who once appeared as a serpent, can take any form. He and his demons can appear and pose even as righteous
people, pastors, priests, and any other unexpected personna. Satan, we are told, will appear as a glorious angel
of light (and remember, he is beautiful - after all that's why he was so proud to start with!). We are even told
that Satan will impersonate Jesus. The difference will be that Satan will come to earth to do so (thank God, He
won't allow Satan to do everything just as Jesus will - those who read their Bibles will know the difference!)
How can we know the real Jesus? Jesus will work a miracle so that EVERY eye will see Him come in the clouds
all at once. It is not clear how this is possible on a round world. But, we can know that if God said it, it will happen
and it will not require any of man's technological advancements - this will be all God's doing! (Revelation 1:7)
Additionally, we are told that Jesus will remain in the clouds. Until this sinful world is made clean and new,
He will not touch the earth. (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
The Bible says that Satan:
A. Deceives and persecutes (Revelation 12:9,13)
B. Quotes and misquotes the Bible to deceive us (Matthew 4:5-6)
C. Falsely accuses Christians and murders when he can (Revelation 12:10, John 8:44)
D. He traps and ensnares (2 Timothy 2:26, 1 Peter 5:8)
E. He makes war against God's true people (Revelation 12:17)
F. Binds and encourages betrayal (Luke 13:16, John 13:2 & 21)
G. He imprisons (Revelation 2:10)
H. He possesses and hinders God's work (Luke 22:3-5, 1 Thessalonians 2:18)
I. He even works miracles to enhance his lies (Revelation 16:13-14, John 8:44)
J. He appears as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
K. Brings disease and affliction (Job 2:7)
L. His demons impersonate pastors to gain our trust (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
M. He has power to work miracles like calling fire down from heaven (Revelation 13:13)
13. How powerful and effective are Satan's tactics?
His lies convinced 1/3 of heaven's angels to leave God and join him. (Revelation 12:3-9)
His lies worked on Adam and Eve - the only humans with perfect intellects (Genesis 3)
All but eight people believed him in the time of Noah - and they died (1 Peter 3:20)
He makes people who are really lost feel like they are saved (Matthew 7:21-23)
Almost the entire world will follow him (Revelation 13:3)
Very few people will actually be saved - maybe this is why Bible truths are not popular - Satan has
been working his evil magic to deceive the whole world (Matthew 7:14, 22:14)
14. So, when is God going to do something about the Devil?
Jesus has already made a way for us to escape Satan. We must believe on Him and follow Him. (John 3:16).
Someday, at the end of the world, Satan will be completely destroyed. God had to allow him to live, however,
in order to prove him wrong. So overmastering was Satan's deception that sinless beings were listening to
him. Satan said that God was unfair and didn't love His creations. If God had simply destroyed Satan the
moment pride appeared in His heart, the universe would have obeyed God, but the love would have been lost. Since
God's whole basis is love, this was unacceptable. He didn't want His creatures to serve Him because they
were afraid he'd destroy them with a fireball if they didn't. So, Satan was allowed to live and show his full
hand. This will leave no question in the minds of all the universe that Satan was telling lies. God is a loving
Thankfully, though, Satan's time is short. The day is soon coming when God will utterly destroy him.
"So shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather
out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of
fire." Matthew 13:40-42
"And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone." Revelation 20:10 (The devil
isn't in charge of hell - he is thrown there, probably kicking and screaming because it will bring him death
"Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." Matthew 25:41
"Therefore I will bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes
upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee... and never shalt thou be any more." Ezekiel 28:18-19
What does the Bible mean when it says, "for the devil knoweth his time is short" (Revelation 12:12)? God is going
to destroy him. He will be burned to ashes. He will be NO MORE! And this is going to happen to him at the
end of the world.
15. Will sin ever rise up again?
God's whole plan has been to rid the universe and our planet from the sin the Devil started. If God could not
accomplish this, than the Devil really is stronger than Him. And we know this cannot be, for the Devil is only
a created being. Never can the creation be better than its Creator. God is going to get rid of sin. And by
allowing Satan to play out his full hand, the entire intelligent universe has seen that God is all about love, and
Satan is all about pain. No one will ever again choose his path. Instead, the loving universe God originally
planned for will finally be.
"As I live, saith the Lord, EVERY knee shall bow to me (that includes even Satan!), and every tongue shall
confess to God." Romans 14:11 (See also Philippians 2:10-11, Isaiah 45:23)
"Affliction shall not rise up the second time." (Nahum 1:9)
"For this purpose the Son of God was manifested (brought to earth to die), that He might destroy the works
of the devil." 1 John 3:8
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the
same (Jesus became flesh and blood because we are flesh and blood), that through death He might destroy
him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." Hebrews 2:14
16. We have seen how great Satan's hatred for humans is. How does God feel about us?
"The Father Himself loveth you." John 16:27 (See John 3:16; 17:22-23)
God can hardly wait for this whole thing to be over. He wants us to be with Him eternally. Just like the
father of the Prodigal son, God lets us know that He is eagerly waiting for us to be home with Him. That
homecoming day is not far off now. Let's be ready!
