The Lighted Way
Satan's Time Out

This study is about a Bible subject that Satan would rather you didn't know about. This is a peek into his "classified" file. He is so bent on you not knowing the truth about this subject that he has invented quite a few falsehoods on the subject. As a result, many people have fallen prey to his lies. For this reason, we recommend that you begin this study with prayer. Ask God to make clear to you the truth about the 1,000 years - the millenium.

1. When does the 1,000-year period begin?

"These came to life again and reigned with Christ for a thousand years." Revelation 20:4

When a group comes to life again, we call it a resurrection. So the Bible points to a resurrection beginning the 1,000-year period of time.

2. What is this resurrection called? Who will be resurrected in it?

We find this answer by merely looking at the next verses in sequence. We have already seen Revelation 20:4, now lets look at verses five and six to see more details:

"This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection." Revelation 20:5-6

The fact that this resurrection is called the "first" implies that there will be another to follow it. The Bible is clear that the "holy" and "blessed" people are the ones raised in this resurrection. Those who have loved the Lord and obeyed His voice throughout all time, since Adam, will be raised up in this resurrection. They will then reign with Christ for a millenium.

3. When is the next resurrection? Who will be resurrected in it?

"The rest of the dead (those who were wicked and unsaved) lived not again until the thousand years were finished." Revelation 20:5

"All that are in the grave shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." John 5:28-29

When the 1,000 years ends, the wicked will be raised in what is called the "resurrection of damnation". So, according to the Bible, the resurrection of the righteous begins the 1,000-year period and the resurrection of the wicked ends it.

4. What can we expect at the beginning of the millenium?

"Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him." Revelation 1:7

"The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,... AND THE DEAD IN CHRIST SHALL RISE FIRST: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air." 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

"And there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great." "And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent (Bible scholars believe this is between 58-100 pounds)." Revelation 16:18-21 (See also, Jeremiah 4:23-26, Isaiah 24:1, 3, 19-20; and Isaiah 2:21)

The millenium will be heralded by some cataclysmic events! The earth will nearly come apart with the power unleashed upon it. The living wicked will be destroyed. The righteous will stand unharmed in the mass destruction (Psalm 91). The power of God protects them. Jesus will appear in the clouds and will take all the righteous (living and resurrected dead) to heaven.

5. When Jesus returns, what happens to the living and dead wicked?

"With the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked." Isaiah 11:4

"When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God." 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8

"Let the wicked perish (die) at the presence of God." Psalm 68:2

"But the rest of the dead lived not again until the 1,000 years were finished." Revelation 20:5

Christ's coming will be powerful, spectacular, and earth-shattering. Just one angel from heaven is so powerful that our human frailty cannot abide it. Think about the reaction of the entire contingent of Roman guards to the angel who appeared at Jesus' tomb. They fell as tho' they were dead men. (Matthew 28:2-4). This was the reaction to the unveiled brightness of one heavenly being. Imagine when the sky is filled with them, and Christ, in His immortal form is in their center! The living wicked will die as if hit by lightning. Those wicked which were already dead, since the time of Adam, will remain so until the end of the 1,000 years.

6. Many believe the unsaved will have a second chance - a time to repent - during the 1,000 years. Is this Biblical?

"The slain of the Lord (the people killed by God) shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented (no one will mourn for them), neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung (excrement) upon the ground." Jeremiah 25:33

"I beheld, and, lo, there was no man." Jeremiah 4:25

Here we see that Scripture makes clear an area Satan would like you to be unclear about. He wants you to live in this life like you'll have another chance. "Go ahead," he says, "Wait... you can wait to repent after Jesus comes... Why not be certain this whole Bible thing is true? Check it out first. If He really comes back, you'll still have time." The Bible is clear that the unsaved will not be able to repent after the second coming of Christ. They will all be dead. Rotting corpses will cover the earth so that all the land will be tainted with their decomposing flesh. Its not a pretty picture. Those who wait for the 1,000 years to be right with God will have waited too long.

We have already seen that the wicked cannot repent during this time, but lets add one more proof. All the heavenly and righteous beings are going to be in heaven during this period. There will be no holy presence on this planet. How is that man can repent? Only with the Holy Spirit. Every step of our salvation is beyond our ability to achieve. We can be sorry that we've gotten caught and will be punished, but we are not capable of true repentence without the influence of the Holy Spirit. The unsaved will have had ample opportunity to turn to the Lord before this time. But now their choice will stand. Their fate is sealed. Jesus says, "He that is righteous, let him be righteous still. And he that is filthy, let him be filthy still." Revelation 22:11. These words of bliss or doom mark the point of no return.

7. What will happen to Satan during this time?

"And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit... And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast Him into the bottomless pit... till the thousand years should be fulfilled." Revelation 20:1-3

The Greek word which is translated into English as "bottomless pit" is "abussos" which means, "abyss". The word meaning abyss is also used in Genesis 1:2 - in the Greek version of the Old Testament. In English, this time it is translated "deep". So it reads:

"The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep (bottomless pit / abyss)." Genesis 1:2

Here we see the connection. The bottomless pit is the earth in its disorganized, dark form before God made it. Will it be returned to such a state for the 1,000-year period? Yes! The Bible teaches that the earth will be destroyed. There will be a "great earthquake" causing mountains and islands to disappear, at the coming of Christ.

In Jeremiah 4:23-28, we find that the Genesis reference to "without form and void" is further explained. In Jeremiah we see that this means "no light", "no man", and "black". The earth will be desolate. And, in its black, desolate state, it becomes the bottomless pit into which Satan is bound and cast.

8. What chain binds Satan? And why is he bound?

"An angel... having... a great chain in his hand... laid hold on... Satan, and bound him a thousand years, ... and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled." Revelation 20:1-3

Here we see that the chain is symbolic. Satan is bound by having no people to deceive. The wicked are all dead and the righteous are all in heaven. The Devil is kept, by the power of God, to the earth. He cannot roam the universe looking for new prey. His time is finished. Being forced to stay on the earth, alone with his demons for a thousand years with no one to harm or deceive, will be for him the most bitter chain ever forged.

8. Lets recap the events which will happen AT THE START of the millenium:

A. Earth-shattering quake - and killer hailstorm (Revelation 16:18-21, Revelation 6:14-17)
B. Second coming of Jesus - for His saints (Matthew 24:30-31)
C. Righteous dead resurrected (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
D. Righteous are all together given the gift of immortality (1 Corinthians 15:51-55)
E. Righteous are given immortal bodies like Jesus has (1 John 3:2, Philippians 3:21)
F. All righteous are carried up into the clouds (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
G. The living wicked are slain by the very breath of God that first gave man life. (Isaiah 11:4)
H. Wicked remain dead - bodies strewn over the planet until the 1,000 years end. (Revelation 20:5)
I. Jesus takes the righteous to heaven for this 1,000 years. (John 13:33-36; 14:1-3)
J. Satan is bound to the earth (Revelation 20:1-3)

Now lets move on to what the purpose of the 1,000 years is designed to accomplish.

9. What are the righteous doing DURING the 1,000 years?

"I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them... and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years." Revelation 20:4

"Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?... Know ye not that we shall judge angels?" 1 Corinthians 6:2-3

God is the One who judges the righteous. It is He Who will decide on Which persons have truly given their hearts to Him. But the SAINTS judge the world. During this 1,000 years, God's record books (there's nothing wrong with His memory, He has kept these records so that WE may know His justice and mercy) will be opened and reviewed by the people of God. They will clearly see the details and choices made by each lost human. There will be no question about whether or not God has given every man, woman, and child ample opportunity to be saved. It will be clear that God has dealt lovingly and fairly with each person. In the end, the righteous will clearly see that the people who are shut out of heaven because they did not want to live in harmony with God's loving universe. They, ultimately, did not want to be with Him.

In addition to reviewing the records of our fellow man, we will also review "judge angels". We will see clearly how Satan fell, and what opportunities to repent were offered and rejected by him. Finally, we will with full knowledge and understanding praise God as our just, merciful, and fair Deity. It is this step which makes the destruction of the wicked necessary and endurable in the minds of the universe. From these records will know that every chance at salvation was and would continue to be rejected. With no possibility for joining the sinless world God will create, there is no option except to purge the universe of these rebellious and evil ones.

10. Lets review what the Bible says will be taking place during the 1,000 years:

A. Earth is sits in a nearly destroyed condition (due to -earthquake, etc) (Revelation 16:18-21, Revelation 6:14-17)
B. Earth is in a state of total blackout - the bottomless pit (Jeremiah 4:23-28)
C. Satan and his angels are bound to the earth (Revelation 20:1-3)
D. Righteous in heaven are participating in the judgment (Revelation 20:4)
E. Wicked are all dead and have no knowedge of this time passing (Jeremiah 4:25, Isaiah 11:4)

11. What happens at the END of the millenium?

"And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven... And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men'." Revelation 21:2-3

"Behold, the day of the Lord cometh." "And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave (split) in the midst thereof (split in the middle)... And the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with Thee." "All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem." Zechariah 14:1,4-5, 10

The new Jerusalem, the heavenly city of God where the saints have lived for the past 1,000 years, will come down to the earth. It will settle where the mount of Olives now stands. God, Jesus, the angels and the saints together will come to the earth. Heaven itself will come HERE! Our earth will become the very center of God's universe. And, while in the second coming Jesus came FOR His saints, in the third coming, Jesus will come WITH His saints.

12. What happens at Jesus' third coming?

"The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished." "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations." Revelation 20:5-8

When Jesus comes back the third time, Satan will have "nations" to decieve again. This is because the resurrection of damnation takes place at His third coming. The wicked are alive again. Satan has new prey, new cronies, a new army. It is time for God to rid the world and the universe from the taint of sin. The Devil had his day. It is, thankfully, now about to end.

13. What is the point of decieving the doomed?

"Satan shall... go out to deceive the nations... of the earth, ...to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city." Revelation 20:7-9

There are more wicked, by far, than righteous. Just in the period before the flood, the wicked were plentiful, yet only 8 were on the boat! The city of God is far outnumbered. Yes, the Devil only has 1/3 of the angels, but he's desperate. If he doesn't win this war, he'll die in the fires of hell. So, he comes out fighting. Its a hopeless battle. How can a created being expect to defeat his Maker? Yet, Satan will rouse the wicked, who are "as the sand of the sea" in numbers, to forcibly take the city of new Jerusalem.

Using all his deceptive powers, Satan will convince the unsaved that if they unite, they can defeat God Himself. This shouldn't be too hard for him to accomplish. The wicked have been underestimating God throughout the ages. Think about the tower of Babel, for one example. After the flood, to be certain they could out-trump God and make sure they would be safe in the event of another flood, the wicked built a tower into the clouds. God was highly irritated at their rebellion and stupidity. But, rather than destroying them, He forced them to stop by giving them the languages of the world. Up until that moment, we had come from one family (Noah's family). We all spoke the same language (whatever that was, we don't know for sure - perhaps Hebrew?). How foolish and evil to think that rather than repenting and becoming saved, they could save themselves. This mentality will make it relatively easy for Satan to rally them for a final, futile attack against God.

14. How will God respond to Satan's attack?

"Fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceiveth them was cast into... the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second (eternal) death." Revelation 20:9-10, 21:8

"The wicked... shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts." Malachi 4:3

Fire will suddenly fall from heaven (it will not come up from hell, as many believe). That holy fire will consume all that is evil - Satan and his angels included. There will be no resurrection from this death. It is final. (For more information on hell, see this site's study on hell).

15. What's next?

"Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth." Isaiah 65:17

"Look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." 2 Peter 3:13

"He that sat upon the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Revelation 21:5

"The tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God." Revelation 21:3

Have you ever wished you could go back in time to see God create the earth? What would it have looked like, sounded like, to observe Him bringing a perfect, life-filled, unstained, unpolluted, world out of blackness? God's people are going to find out! Live and in person, we will joyously witness the recreation of this devastated planet - and even the "heavens". Whatever heavenly bodies, our sinfulness has touched will be remade. Like a germ, from which the universe must be disinfected, the taint of sin is purged with holy fire. Now what is made will never be touched by ugliness, pain, pollution, or any vile or evil thing.

But the most amazing thing of all about this new world is that our Heavenly Father will be living with us! What a thought! The God of the universe wants to be with MAN! Wow! Have you ever doubted God's great love for you? Have you ever felt that He was too big or too busy to care? God is far from this picture. He is so anxious to have sin done. He is so anxious to be able to be with you - forever! This time of separation from us, as was necessary because of sin, is a great tribulation for God. He created us to have our companionship and love. So far, our choices have not made this possible. But in the end, it will all come down to this: Would you like to be with God? Does the idea of living in His Holy company fill you with joy? Or, does the concept of dwelling with your loving Lord and King fill you with fear, dread, and bitterness? It is this question which will divide the "men from the boys", the saints from the sinners... We are preparing to live with our Holy God is a sinless world. Are you getting ready?
